Cats' City
Characters: Storyteller, Mother Cat, om Cat, First Kitten,
Second Kitten, Tiird Kitten, Old Pussy Cat.
Scene 1
Setting: A house in the middle of the tage. Mother Cat is inside. Storyteller:
Poor Pussy Cat.
By the window sat,
Tom Cat passed by
And heard her cry.
(Brave music)
Tom Cat: Dear Puss, tell me why
Do you weep and sigh?
Mother Cat (using a big handkerchief):
The wicked cook
Some liver took,
Then to his shame,
Said I was to blame.
Now I'm in disgrace
And can't show my face
Or I'll get a good hiding!
(Mother Cat puts her handkerchief on her eyes.)
Where are you going, my dear Cat?
Tom Cat: I'm going to town to buy a hat.
Mother Cat: What? A hat for a cat? A cat in a hat?
Who ever saw a cat in a hat?
(Tom Cat goes away. Brave music.)
Scene 2
(The Kittens come in. Lively music)
Storyteller: The three little kittens
Lost their mittens,
And they began to cry.
First Kitten: Oh, Mother dear,
Second Kitten: We very much fear,
Third Kitten (crying): We have lost our mittens!
Mother Cat: What? Lost your mittens?
You're naughty kittens!
Then you will have no pie.
(The Kittens go away and meet Tom Cat.
Lively music.)
Tom Cat: Where are' you going,
My little kittens?
Kittens: We are going to town
To get us some mittens.
Tom Cat: Mittens for kittens!
Do kittens wear mittens? Who ever saw kittens in the mittens?
(Tom Cat goes away, Kittens run back to their Mother. Brave music.)
Storyteller: The three little kittens
Found their mittens,
And they began to cry.
(The Kittens run in. Lively music)
First Kitten: Oh, Mother dear, see here!
Second Kitten (Showing the mittens): See here!
Third Kitten: See, we have found our mittens!
Mother Cat: Oh, you're good kittens! Put on your mittens,
And you will have some pie! (She gives them pies. The Kittens go away. Lively music)
Scene 3
(The Kittens, eating pies, meet the Old Pussy Cat.)
First Kitten, Second Kitten:
Pussy Cat, Pussy Cat,
Where have you been?
Old Pussy Cat (using a cane):
I've been to London
To look at the Queen.
Third Kitten:
Pussy Cat, Pussy Cat,
What did you do there?
Old Pussy Cat:
I frightened a little mouse
Under a chair.
(The Kittens laughing run back to their mother. Lively music)
Storyteller: The three little kittens
Put on their mittens
And soon ate up the pie.
First Kitten: Oh, mother dear, we greatly fear
Second Kitten: Our mittens we have soiled!
Mother Cat: What?
Soiled your mittens?
You're naughty kittens.
Go and wash your mittens!
Storyteller: And they began to cry. (Sad music)
Scene 4
(Kittens weeping meet Old Pussy Cat)
Old Pussy Cat:
I know a puss and who she is
I'll tell you by and by,
When Mummy says "Do this" or "that",
She says: "What for?" and "Why?"
She'd be a better puss by far
If she would say: "I'll try."
Storyteller: The three little kittens
They washed their mittens
And hang them up to dry.
(The Kittens run back to mother. Lively music)
Second Kitten: Oh, mother dear, didn't you hear?
Third Kitten: Our mittens we have washed!
Mother Cat (happily):
What? Washed your mittens?
You're good little kittens.
Now you will have more pie!
But... I smell a mouse close by!
Kittens: We smell a mouse close by!
(All the actors run out to the proscenium)
All the cats of the city (in chorus):
Little mouse, little mouse,
Quicker, quicker to the house!
One, two, three, four -
Run to the door!
We are going to look you for!
(The actors make a general bow. Lively music)
